What Creatine Does

Creatine's primary job is to regenerate ATP, adenosine triphosphate, the molecule your cells use for energy. Every explosive movement you make burns through ATP faster than your body can resynthesise it from scratch. Creatine, stored in muscle as phosphocreatine, donates a phosphate group to ADP to rapidly rebuild it. The result: more sustained power output, less fatigue, faster recovery between sets.

A comprehensive 2012 review by Cooper et al. confirms that creatine monohydrate consistently increases strength, fat-free mass, and training adaptations more than resistance training alone, with an exceptional safety record across populations.[1] A synthesis of over 300 studies by Bemben et al. concluded that creatine produces significant improvements in force production across most sports, sexes, and age groups.[2]

A systematic review of six RCTs by Avgerinos et al. found that creatine improves short-term memory and intelligence/reasoning in healthy individuals, with the most pronounced effects in aging adults and those with lower baseline creatine stores.[3] A 2023 narrative review by Candow et al. highlights creatine's emerging role in brain health, including applications for traumatic brain injury recovery, depression, and cognitive performance under sleep deprivation.[4]
