What Is L-Lysine?

L-Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning the human body cannot synthesise it and must obtain it entirely through diet or supplementation. It is one of the nine essential amino acids and serves as a critical building block for proteins throughout the body, including collagen, enzymes, and antibodies.

In many Asian dietary patterns, particularly those lower in red meat and higher in refined grains, lysine is frequently the first limiting amino acid, meaning it is most likely to be consumed below optimal levels.

Lysine and Collagen Synthesis

Lysine is structurally essential for collagen formation. During post-translational processing, lysine residues in collagen are hydroxylated by lysyl hydroxylase (which requires vitamin C as a cofactor) to form hydroxylysine. These modified residues form the crosslinks between collagen fibres that give connective tissue its tensile strength and resilience. A 2024 systematic review by Gunarathne et al. confirms that lysine supplementation positively influences immunological indicators, protein synthesis markers, bone metabolic indicators, and hormonal profiles, with a strong safety record and no reported toxicity at standard supplemental doses.[3]
